An exclusive wine trip to Merano
Get to know South Tyrolean wines in Merano and its surroundings

If you visit South Tyrol as a gourmet traveler, you (fortunately!) cannot get around the wine. South Tyrol and its wine variety are known worldwide and enjoy an excellent reputation. The most famous wineries in South Tyrol can be found in the area around Merano and in the Alto Adige Bassa Atesina. There are many opportunities to taste the fine wines and learn more about the best wines in South Tyrol as well as their cultivation. Today we’ll present the highlights to you.

Viticulture in South Tyrol

Wine has been cultivated in South Tyrol for an incredible 3,000 years. As the South Tyrolean vineyards are located at altitudes between 200 and 1,000 meters, the varieties cultivated and the resulting wines are extremely diverse. With Vernatsch and Lagrein, South Tyrol has two autochthonous grape varieties and Gewürztraminer, which is cultivated worldwide, is named after the South Tyrolean village of “Tramin”. The wines are produced in 170 wineries.

Cantina Merano Winery

16 different grape varieties are transformed into 35 different wines by master craftsmen at the Cantina Merano Winery, our partner winery. Three of these are autochthonous grape varieties and have their origins in South Tyrol. All grapes come from the vineyards around Merano and from the Venosta Valley - two wine-growing regions with exciting contrasts. Alpine freshness and Mediterranean charm meet and are also reflected in the taste experience. The Cantina Merano Winery stands for quality and tradition and was founded in 2013 as a merger of two wineries. Since then, the team behind it has been constantly striving to offer exciting products that combine craftsmanship, traditional knowledge and new or newly discovered processing methods. Would you like to get to know Merano wines better? Then visit the panoramic enoteca, talk to experts about your passion, taste your favorite varieties and get to know new ones, or take part in a cellar tour with wine tasting in Merano.

The South Tyrolean Wine Road

The South Tyrolean Wine Road, one of the oldest in Italy, begins near Nalles and runs via Bolzano down to Alto Adige Bassa Atesina and its southern border near Salorno. An enjoyable discovery tour along the Wine Road is a must on any wine trip to South Tyrol! 16 picturesque villages, 70 wineries and over 4,000 hectares of vineyards along the road invite you to admire, taste and enjoy. Cycling along the wine route is particularly popular - a tour that is also suitable for less experienced bikers. Popular destinations include the wine museum or the wine academy in Caldaro as well as the many traditional restaurants in the area.

Wine tastings in Merano

Spend pleasant hours in good company after a varied day in the spa town with an exclusive wine tasting in Merano. Our recommendation: the CITY.VINOTHEK of the Cantina Merano Winery under the historic arcades. Wines, sparkling wines, grappa and special rarities can be tasted and enjoyed in the lavishly renovated building of the Lagundo Winery. A wine tasting in the Merano CITY.VINOTHTEK is also an opportunity to try the multi-award-winning sparkling wine BRUT RISERVA 36 “metodo classico”. A must for every wine lover!

Merano WineFestival

The Merano WineFestival has been taking place in the Merano Kurhaus every year since 1992 - an event that all lovers of good taste should have been to at least once! For five consecutive days in autumn, guests are delighted by a series of wine and fine dining events. The focus is not only on South Tyrolean wines, but also on the best labels from all over Italy. Show-cooking sessions, award ceremonies, sustainability talks, parties and tastings ensure variety and a unique atmosphere.
